Privacy & Data
This page is maintained by your school or district to answer common questions about how Edu handles student information. It describes technical controls built into the app; formal FERPA compliance also depends on the policies and agreements adopted by your institution.
Edu stores only the information a school needs to track learning:
- Account: name, email, role, school/district, and (for students) grade level.
- Learning records: assignments, submissions, grades, rubric scores, attendance, and standards mastery.
- Coursework: teacher-created modules, lessons, resources, discussions, quizzes, and peer reviews.
- Consent records: parental/guardian consent status per student.
- Audit trail: who viewed or changed sensitive records, and when.
These limits are enforced by the database itself, not just by what the app chooses to show. Even if someone found a way around the screens, the records below simply would not be returned.
| Role | Can see | Never sees |
|---|---|---|
| Student | Their own classes, assignments, grades and rubric scores, submissions and teacher feedback, attendance, goals, peer reviews they were asked to write, their own promotion history, and their own profile. | Anything belonging to another student — including classmates in the same class. When messaging a teacher or classmate, they see only that person's name, never their grades, email, or records. |
| Parent / guardian | Everything above, but for each child explicitly linked to their account: grades, attendance, feedback, goals, consent records and promotion history. | Any other family's child, and any class their child is not enrolled in. |
| Teacher | Only the classes they teach (current and past terms) and the students enrolled in them — their assignments, submissions, grades, attendance, rubrics and goals. | A colleague's class roster, students they don't teach, and any other school's students. |
| School admin | Their own school only: its teachers, students, classes, terms, attendance and analytics. | Any other school, even one in the same district. |
| District admin | Every school in their own district, and the staff, students and classes inside those schools. | Any school or student in another district. |
| Super admin | Everything, plus the audit log of who viewed or changed sensitive records. | — |
Throughout the app, list pages show a short note under the heading telling you exactly which slice of data you are looking at — for example "Showing the 24 students in your classes."
- We do not sell student data.
- We do not use student data to train third-party AI models.
- We do not share personally identifiable student information with advertisers.
- Passwords are never stored or logged in readable form.
Parents and legal guardians have the right to inspect, review, and request correction of their child's education records. To make a request, contact your school administrator or email the address your institution provides for records requests.
Your institution should replace this contact with its designated records officer. Edu does not process these requests directly on behalf of the school.
